A
brief history
The
Dover Counselling Centre was formed in 1988, and is a company
and a charity. The Centre grew out of the Herald Assistance Unit (HAU), a service set up by
Kent County Council
in 1987,
following the capsize of the Herald of Free Enterprise ferry.
|
|
The
HAU workers recognised the continuing needs of the bereaved,
survivors, and the wider community, therefore when Kent County Council withdrew its funding and left on 30th June 1988, the Dover
Counselling Centre opened on 1st July 1988; effectively having
never closed its doors. Thus, the continuity of care for
existing clients, as well as the facility to expand the range of
services offered, was ensured.

Janet
Johnston, together with Colin Weaver (HAU Team Manager), ran
a training course for Cruse Bereavement Care counsellors, both
having been involved with that charity. Until counsellors were
trained and selected, they also acted as receptionists until
relevant staff were appointed. With the help of RELATE, Marriage
Guidance counsellors were sent to Dover, and the Kent Council on
Addiction ran a training course to recruit new counsellors.
|
|
Thus,
the Dover Counselling Centre became established, offering
counselling via Cruse Bereavement Care, Kent Council on
Addiction, and Relate, in addition to offering a general
counselling service.
